Wolves Transfer Records: Who Are Wolverhampton Wanderers Most Expensive Signings Of All Time?

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, more commonly known as Wolves, has a rich and diverse history, having featured in all four divisions and been English champions in the early years of the Football League.

Like most modern football clubs, Wolves have had to invest majorly in players in the transfer market in recent years. Here are Wolves’ top-ten most expensive signings:

Mattheus Nunes (Signed from Sporting CP for £38m)

The attacking midfielder joined Wolves in August 2022 from Sporting CP for a club-record fee reported to be around £38m, having impressed in the centre of Sporting’s midfield. The Midlands club pulled off something of a coup by signing the Portuguese international, as both Manchester United and Everton had reported interest in Nunes.

Nunes has established himself as a mainstay of the Wolves’ midfield and is only likely to improve with experience.

Fabio Silva (Signed from Porto for £35m)

The highly-rated youngster is another player to have joined the Midlands club from Portuguese football. He joined at just 18 and became the club’s record signing when he joined in September 2020.

His tender years meant that he wasn’t quite ready to play regular first-team football. Silva was loaned out to Anderlecht for the 2022/23 season, where he scored seven goals in 20 appearances. In the summer of 2023, he was off on another loan, this time to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

Raul Jimenez (Signed from Benfica for £30m)

The Mexican forward initially joined Wolves on loan in the summer of 2018 before joining the Midlands club on a permanent deal the following summer for £30m, having enjoyed a successful debut campaign with the club.

Jimenez has established himself as a modern-day Wolves hero. He is the club’s top goalscorer in the Premier League. He also won the Wolves Player of the Year award in season 2019/20, as well as the Player’s Player of the Year award in both seasons 2018/19 and 2019/20.

Nelson Semedo (Signed from Barcelona for an initial £30m, potentially rising to £37m)

The full-back joined Wolves from Catalan giants Barcelona for a reported initial fee of £30m, potentially rising to £37m with add-ons in September 2020. The Portuguese international has made over 50 Premier League appearances for the club from Midlands, enjoying mixed fortunes during his time in the Midlands.

Goncalo Guedes (Signed from Valencia for £27.5m)

The Portuguese attacking midfielder joined the Midlands club in August 2022 from Valencia for a fee of £27.5m. Guedes arrived at Wolves with a reputation for being a player with big potential that had not quite yet been fulfilled.

Unfortunately, Guedes struggled to really find form in his debut campaign. In January 2023, Guedes joined his former club Benfica on loan until the end of season 2023/24.

Nathan Collins (Signed from Burnley for £20.5m)

The young Irish centre-back joined Wolves for a fee of £20.5m from Burnley in the summer of 2022. His fee was a record for an Irish player. Collins had impressed first for Stoke City and then for Burnley before his switch to the Midlands.

Collins was a regular at the heart of the Wolves’ defence in the first half of season 2022/23, although he did miss three Premier League games after being dismissed against Manchester City on 17th September 2022.

Jonny Otto (Signed from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee)

The Spanish full-back joined Wolves from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £18m in July 2018. Jonny, as he is better known, has gone on to make over a century of appearances for the men from the Midlands and become a popular figure amongst the club’s fans.

Adama Traore (Signed from Middlesbrough for £18m)

The mercurial winger joined Wolves from Middlesbrough in August 2018 for a fee of around £18m. Traore went on to make over 150 appearances for the club from the Midlands in all competitions.

He enjoyed a highly inconsistent career with Wolves before a loan switch to Barcelona in January 2022. The winger made 11 appearances for the Catalan giants before returning to the Midlands club in the summer of 2023.

Daniel Podence (Signed from Olympiakos for a £17m)

The diminutive winger joined Wolves in January 2020 from Olympiakos for a fee of around £17m. After a relatively slow start to his career with the Midlands club, Podence became a regular in the Wolves starting line-up, making over 24 Premier League appearances in seasons 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23.

Joao Gomes (Signed from Flamengo for £15m)

The Brazilian midfielder joined Wolves in the January transfer window of 2023, arriving from Flamengo for a fee of £15m. He scored a winning goal for Wolves in a 2-1 win against Southampton on his debut, having come off the substitutes bench.
